This is just a new cliche. Random edgy Emo kids thrown around everywhere.
Especially in naruto

Let's say for example: Sasuke (Naruto), Takasugi (Gintama), L,(death note) Gaara (naruto), Nagato(naruto), Death The Kid(Soul Eater), Celestia (danganronpa), Kaneki (tokyo ghoul), Accelerator(railgun), and Inukai (relife) etc etc.

You know it. What's with this? What do you think about this?
A new trend?

Calling Accelerator an emo. That's a funny one. Also, you talk about a new trend, but some of the characters you mentioned are more than a decade old.

Edgy teens have been around in anime for a while, since the early 2000s. I'm generally okay with them only if they have a reason to act the way they do. Normally, I dislike them since they try too hard to be "edgy" and "cool" like a bland self-insert for teenagers.

What's wrong with his hair?
It's not a neckband, it's an electrode choker. It lets him use his powers and keeps him from turning into a vegetable.
He doesn't act like that anymore, and back when he did it was because everyone kept picking up a fight with him.

Maybe lets start with what's your definition of an "edgy emo kid", because you mentioned Sasuke and Gaara, while those are completely different characters, especially post-timeskip.

Those are not even new anime.
Anyway, it's just one of many... clichés often(?) seen in anime. I don't see it standing out from any other clichés.

Puberty.
It's everywhere in anime because teenagers hit that shit hard.
It's certainly not new.

Tokoyami is the only emo i can forgive... because he has a goddamn falcon for a face! :D

OT: meh i'm not particular a fan off or against, as long as there is a groundbreaking backstory behind why such character act that way or is used just for comedic effect i dont mind.

The appeal is that a lot of people into anime are awkward and socially inept, so it reassures them when a character's antisocial behavior is portrayed as cool, or something that the character uses to intentionally put distance between himself and others (rather than a failure to fit in).

They're usually the least interesting characters, but teenagers mistake mopey brooding for depth so they're invariably the most popular characters in the show.

Shinji is a notable subversion of this in that his failure to connect with people isn't glamorized, hence all the hate he gets. There's no escapist value in him for self-inserters.

I wouldn't call L an edgy emo kid. Characters like Misa and Mellow lean more towards that. L is just a recluse.

This trope isn't really a new thing. It existed since at least the 90s, and can probably be attributed to the fact that most anime center around children/teenagers, who often go through those phases.

I mean it can't really be a new trend when you list shows that released over 14 years, and 3 from the same series.
But maybe my definition of new is as outdated as some of the examples.

anime fans are mostly teenagers their idea of being a cool badass is closer to what most people would describe as emo
i also kind of hate this term it seems to implicts downplay the hardships and the angsty most teenagers go through in all the ocasions it is used

Some people have had lived through horrible things, but they still retain SOME level of happiness. Sure, maybe they still suffer from the trauma, but they still have hobbies, they still laugh and play. Characters like Sasuke don't. It's stupid.

Edgelords > all other types of characters

But yeah, like others have mentioned, this isn't a new trend at all. Characters like Sasuke have been around forever.

What's the difference?

>character from an anime that premiered in 2002
k

I don't know I feel like since I became a grown adult with bills n' shit
I don't like them, I dropped Attack on Titan because of it, I can't watch SAO because of it, I dropped Elfin Lied not really for an edgy character in particular just edgy in general, plus I couldn't stand that animation.

I understand edgy characters are made to relate to teens more than me.

So I don't really hate them, I just don't like them as they aren't something I can connect with that often. I'd rather have someone like Space Dandy, or Vash as a protagonist than most of Naruto's characters.

Hell the best Naruto character hands down is Rock Lee, the least edgy of them all.

from wiktionary:
2. (entertainment, advertising) creatively challenging; cutting edge; leading edge
3. (entertainment, advertising) on the edge between acceptable and offensive; pushing the boundaries of good taste; risqué
These being the former and original meanings in this sort of context

7. (slang) Cool by virtue of being tough, dark, or badass.
being the follow-on usage

And in our contemporary usage it's become (a usually derisive) word for things containing graphic violence, 'shock-value', angst, (teen) (melo)drama, "adult" content, and anti-social behaviours.

Bruh, Sasuke literally had his clan killed. Was tortured with those visions by his brother a thousand times or something with the eye jutus, literally was his brother's goal to make him like that.

Gaara was a dude who had assasination attempts happen on him since a child, and he killed then all in retaliation. His one own guardian tried to kill him. Edgy? Tf would you be bruh? Cheerful? And Nagato was literally born in war times. So out of place boo hoo

Dumb, pretty dumb.
